Glass tabletops are used in a number of different ways, but the most popular is to use the glass to protect the surface of a table, desk, coffee table or other furniture. When used as a cover on a wood surface, you can use a thinner glass such as 1/4". The edges of the glass are normally polished to smooth them out and avoid the possibility of injury from the sharp edges.
Glass table tops can also be used in situations where the entire surface is made out of glass and the glass sets on a base. The support can be made of glass, wood, metal, or any other material. In these instances, the glass has to be tempered for safety reasons. Thickness should be at least 3/8” and edges have to be flat polished or beveled, depending on preference.
