Glass block is a glass brick, empty inside, a unique building material that has the properties of both glass and a structural element. Glass block compositions are more than windows and more than just walls.

This is an incredible combination of functionality and the possibility of embodying the imagination of architects, designers in interiors and exteriors. Glass block is a material that is created to embody the architecture of light. Glass blocks wonderfully fill with light, transform dark and inexpressive rooms, visually increasing their space due to the depth of light penetration.

Here are the main types of glass blocks: colorless, smooth and with patterns; colored glass blocks from colored glass melt (body tinted); bright colored glass blocks (inside injected, painted inside).

The main characteristics of glass blocks are their main advantages. First of all, it is light transmission close to a light transmission of window glass. It is about 80% for colorless and from 50 to 70% for color and matte glass blocks.

Thermal insulation. Glass blocks are wonderful heat insulators, with indicators close to standard double-glazed windows.

Soundproofing. Glass blocks are good soundproofing material. The walls of glass blocks soundproofed superior to a brick wall of the same thickness.

In addition, useful properties of glass blocks are fire resistance, resistance to temperature extremes, moisture resistance.

Also, the glass block is an absolutely environmentally friendly material, which, moreover, is unpretentious in maintenance.

A modest watchmaker lived in Switzerland, and his name was Pierre-Louis Ginan. Looking at his puny figure and expressionless eyes, it was hard to think that he was capable of doing anything significant. Meanwhile, it was this man who turned out to be the ancestor of optical glass.

 After all, ordinary glass is not clean enough for such responsible work! Let's take a closer look at him: here is a small dark dot. You can’t wash it off, you can’t scrub it, it’s inside the glass. And here is a bubble, strip, scratch...

And for the manufacture of lenses, glass is to be so clean and transparent that it is difficult to even pick up anything in nature for comparison. If we talk about the water of a spring - and that will be inaccurate.

Only rock crystal has the purest transparency that is achieved in the manufacture of optical glass. After all, lenses inserted into a telescope or microscope help a person to look into a world that is not visible with a simple eye.

For several centuries, glassmakers sought to obtain a glass in which there would be no spots, no stripes, or bubbles. Chemists made a variety of recipes for glass melting.

Optical Glass

They added lead oxide and received clear, clear crystal-glass; they replaced lead oxide with boric and phosphoric acid, introduced zinc oxide, arsenic, antimony...

All this really gave the glass greater transparency. But the bubbles...

But in 1811, new lenses appeared on sale. And what surprised everyone was their size. New lenses were four times larger than before. But this is not enough. They were transparent, they had no stripes, no dots and there were almost no bubbles. It turned out that the secret to creating these lenses was not discovered by a chemist, not a glass specialist, but by some Swiss watchmaker named Pierre-Louis Ginan. And he did not want to reveal his secret to anyone.

Both in the Middle Ages and at the present time, several sketches are first drawn, from which the customer selects the most appropriate to his plan and wishes. The client can select a picture from the catalog, it can be used in full or taken as a basis for further changes. Or the customer can offer his drawing or photograph.

After coordination, a color option is developed, which is proposed for consideration by the client. The customer amends the color scheme and finally approves the drawing. Then the figure is digitized on a computer, taking into account the technological features of production.

Then, a volumetric ultrastrong polymer contour is applied to the glass using a machine, repeating the approved pattern. After that, the gaps are filled with colored polymer varnishes, which, after solidification, form an unremovable layer on the glass.

Given that since the invention of stained glass, many centuries have passed, it is surprising that the technology for creating stained-glass windows from the color glass has not changed much. First, the artist makes a sketch, after which the glass is cut and inserted into the lead profile. Glasses, which are inserted into a metal frame, are pushed together and are soldered on both sides. The lead profile is patinated, after which the stained-glass window begins to shimmer with saturated color and creates a magnificent flicker. This technology is considered classic, but there are several no less interesting and modern options.

The price of a stained-glass window consists of the following components and will depend on the following factors: the departure of employees to measure the future composition, creating a sketch in one or more copies, the size of the stained-glass window, the basis for a stained-glass window (glass, mirror, etc.), the presence or absence of backlight, the cost of consumables, the complexity of installing a stained-glass window.
A straight and long street is visible from my window. It is lined on both sides by houses. And there is a park in the middle. But what is at the end of the street is not visible to me - the distance seems to be covered with misty haze. I put on my glasses - and the foggy haze disappears. I see the trembling leaves on the bushes, red and silver-gray roofs of houses, strewn with yellow sand paths in the park.

 And behind them, high, high, at the very sky - dark lilac outlines of the mountains. And even higher is a star. It flickers a little and seems lonely in the pale evening sky.

But as soon as you remove the glasses, everything disappears at once: the star, and the outlines of the mountains, and the roofs of houses ... A wonderful power is laid in the small pieces of glass inserted into the frame of the glasses! They bring the farthest closer, make it visible. Such pieces of glass are called lenses.

I am a short-sighted person and I need glass lenses through which you can look into the distance. They are thicker at the edges than in the middle and are called concave or scattering. And there are still convex or collecting lenses. These are most often needed by older people. In the distance, they see well, but do not distinguish closely located objects.

Probably, people with poor eyesight had a bad time in those distant times when they still did not know glasses. Someone with age gradually lost the ability to do the usual work, while still quite physically strong. And how it was for educated people? Neither can you compose yours or read other people's "opuses." Right, a tragedy and only: they had to use servants and slaves as scribes and readers...

Fortunately, this did not happen often: there were far fewer educated people in those days than today. And there were few shortsighted people, then the people did not sit in front of the screens day and night!
All-glass or combination showcases may consist entirely of glass or contain inserts of wood, plastic, aluminum profile, particleboard, medium-density fibreboard. They can be independent trade equipment or combined with other cabinet furniture - stands, cabinets, racks. Glass structures for bijouterie and jewelry made of precious metals are additionally equipped with mirror surfaces. If necessary, an excellent solution is the use of various options for highlighting the goods.

There are also “warm” and “cold” display cases. “Warm”, due to the use of double or triple glass, with a special aluminum profile, have good heat and sound insulation properties.

Advantages of glass display cases: shockproof and safe; have excellent demonstration qualities; equipped with high-quality fittings; made to order according to customer requirements; reliable and durable; with a guarantee of quality.

Accessories for showcases are selected individually, taking into account design features. Whether it’s connectors, hinges, holders, locks, plugs, shelf holders - components are always used of the highest quality and only from trusted manufacturers.

The triplex used in the manufacture of display cases is a strong and durable material. It does not crumble upon impact since its parts remain fixed on the film between the layers, while there will be no sharp edges. Therefore, aluminum triplex structures are safe and reliable.

Worth remembering! Tempered glass is not subject to any mechanical processing (cutting, drilling).
The glass workshops of Constantinople, which became the main city of the Byzantine Empire, occupied an entire area near the marina. And in another part of the city, where ancient palaces, temples, mosques are located, you can see painted glass windows and glass ornaments sparkling like precious stones on palaces walls and ceilings.

Modern Persian Glass Vase
Modern Persian Glass Vase

All this has been preserved since that time, which is commonly called the Middle Ages. Glass at that time continued to be considered a luxury item, although many countries already knew how to make it.

But centuries passed, and the Constantinople masters got competitors and rivals. At first, they showed up in Persia. A beautiful vase dating back to the sixth century has been preserved. It is made by Persian craftsmen and made of gold, rock crystal, and stained glass. And at the end of the ninth century, that is, more than a thousand years ago, the Italian city of Venice became the main rival of Constantinople.

Through this city, which grew up on the picturesque islands of the Adriatic Sea, ships sailed with all the goods of Constantinople. There were ships with glass.

Venetian Glass

The Venetians were very smart and enterprising guys. They built their merchant fleet and began to buy glass products in Constantinople and export them to other countries, as the Phoenicians once did, reselling products of glass craftsmen from Egypt.

Gradually they themselves learned to make glass things and reached such perfection that no one could distinguish a copy from the original.
Do you want your kitchen to become a real culinary realm, pleasing to the eye and allowing you to conveniently prepare food? Then make the kitchen cozier and more functional by installing a glass backsplash for the kitchen. To tempered and heat-resistant glass (at least 6 mm thick) using special technology, any image that you have chosen can be applied.

Glass Backsplash

The advantages of glass backsplashes for the kitchen:
- glass - a great alternative to ordinary ceramic tiles and other building materials, traditionally used as decoration of work areas on the walls of the kitchen;
- glass backsplashes look incredibly impressive;
- they are environmentally friendly and hygienic;
- toughened glass is about six times stronger than ordinary glass panels;
- such backsplashes remarkably tolerate high-temperature effects (in fact, they are fireproof), are not afraid of steam and moisture, and also do not absorb grease, dirt, and dust;
- they are easily cleaned with a napkin and washed, due to the lack of tile joints.

Glass Backsplash

For the manufacture of backsplash use a glass whole sheet with a thickness of 4 to 10 millimeters. Thanks to the modern method of photo printing, any pattern can be transferred to the surface of the panels, which gives unlimited possibilities in the design of rooms.

Glass backsplashes do not need special care: it is enough to wipe them with an ordinary damp sponge, then with a soft dry cloth.

The backsplash panels are fastened securely to the wall between the countertop and the hinged kitchen cabinets.

He was undoubtedly a talented person. And not only talented - he was educated. In those distant times, man learned from nature itself. To conquer her, it was necessary to comprehend many of her secrets. People learned to use fire, grow cereals, and process the skins of killed animals. They learned to make paints, to make dishes out of stones, to build a home.

Ceramic Tableware. - Volga Bulgaria, XI-XIII centuries.

One after another, various crafts appeared in human society. The most ancient of them was probably a pottery craft - making clay products.

Clay is a malleable material. It is easy to give any form to her. Besides the fact that clay is soft, plastic, it has one more remarkable property: after burning it becomes hard as a stone.

However, the earliest clay bowls and jugs, not yet decorated with anything, were unattractive in all other respects. They had rough edges, uneven, rough walls. They could not hold water for long: it seeped through the small pores found in clay.

For many generations of potters, they thought about how to make the walls of clay vessels impervious to moisture, smooth and beautiful. And one of them managed to make such a vessel. Once a potter noticed a shiny spot on the jug after firing.

- Where did it come from? - the master was surprised.

The spot was smooth, shiny. And the master thought that it would be nice to do such all the dishes. But how to achieve this?

He began to observe the roasting of his jugs. And what turned out? Shiny spots form where sand mixed with bonfire ash falls on the walls of the jug. It was the first glass glaze.

Pendulum glass doors are now incredibly in demand. Such popularity is connected, first of all, with the fact that they are endowed with a very important functional feature - the ability to open in both directions. Have you ever wondered how smoothly and silently the transparent pendulum doors move, which you are so habitually pushing in different directions in the shopping center? True, their pendulum design is very convenient?

 Pendulum Glass Doors
Pendulum Glass Doors
This is true because of those who use pendulum doors every day, pushing them when entering or leaving rooms, then, once again in rooms with ordinary doors, experience a certain feeling of irritation from the need to open and close the door.

Glass pendulum doors owe their name to the basic principle of operation - opening and closing on both sides, which is very similar to the movement of a pendulum of an antique clock. The doors are made of impact-resistant tempered glass and are extremely safe.

Glass pendulum door panels in rooms with a high level of attendance are especially convenient. They are a stylish addition to the interior and an effective way to prevent congestion primarily in places where people move simultaneously in opposite directions.

Interior Pendulum Doors
Interior Pendulum Doors
In a private house or apartment, most often this design of glass doors is chosen for the hallway, living room, hall. In public places - offices and boutiques - pendulum doors are often an integral part of shop windows and glass partitions.

The variety of manufacturing glass doors with a pendulum mechanism is amazing. With the help of this light and airy material, it is so easy to emphasize the individuality of the atmosphere and add some zest to the interior style.

When choosing glass doors to a house or apartment, you need to take into account not only your own tastes and preferences but also pay attention to the availability of free space. If it is limited, get a sliding or backtracking mechanism of the door with photo printing, this will help to arrange furniture more efficiently. If you prefer a bright personality in the style of the interior, choose curved or radial doors made of tempered glass, using the advice of specialists. Inside buildings, in offices and apartments, glass doors are most often made swing doors.

For the manufacture of glass doors, tempered glass or triplex from 8 to 12 mm is used.
Glass can be: transparent, brightened, frosted, tinted, bent (radial). It is possible to apply art design onto the glass by sandblasting. It is also possible: - UV printing on glass; - manufacturing of engraving on glass; - application of fusing; - drawing a matted image by chemical etching; - pasting glass with protective and sun-reflecting films; - painting of glass and accessories according to the catalog or by individual order.

The design of glass doors uses special fittings for glass.

Mankind has discovered window glass at least twice. There is evidence that this material, although of much lower quality, was used by the ancient Romans, but after the fall of Rome, the technology was lost. Therefore, for a long time, people did with alternative solutions, including closing windows with wooden shutters, and also inserted oiled paper, pieces of fabric and even bull bubbles into the windows.

 Window Glass
Window Glass
At first the window panes were small. Small squares were inserted into the binding, and so glazed windows were obtained. Only in the 18th century did people learn how to make large-sized flat glass. Over the following centuries, technology was seriously improved. And scientific and technological progress finally resolved the issue of glazing. As a result, window glass retained only one property from its former elitism - fragility. However, this drawback is completely eliminated in modern multilayer products that do not break and do not shatter into fragments. At the same time, the cost of such window panes is relatively high, which is quite justified.

Modern window panes are affordable, although they have decent consumer properties.

Triplex Window Glass
Triplex Window Glass
The main characteristics of window glass:

1) a density of the order of 2.5 kg/m²; strength - 1000 N/mm² (high resistance to pressure);

2) a relatively small break-up strength (40 MPa, or up to 200 MPa for tempered glass);

3) elasticity, not susceptibility to deformation up to failure; low thermal conductivity, the ability to withstand thermal shock.

There are also special energy-saving products with a low emission surface. Among other options are hardened, armored, reflex, film (decorative) modifications.

“Dutch tears” or “Batavian tears” are an illustration of one of the interesting properties of glass. It's popularly to call them "drops of Prince Rupert." Making a drop of Prince Rupert is not difficult. Simply take the red-hot glass and drip it into a bucket of water. Water quickly cools the outer surface of the glass, while inside the temperature remains high. When the glass finally cools inside, it shrinks inside the already solid outer shell. This creates a very strong strain.

Drops of Prince Rupert

 Interestingly, such a drop has tremendous durability! Unlike ordinary glass, the drop cannot be broken even by striking it very hard with a hammer - if you hit the main part of the “drop”. It can not be crushed by the press. However, if you slightly damage the “tail” of the tear, it explodes like a grenade. True, this process can only be seen with a camera capable of shooting at a speed of 100,000 frames per second.

The Drop of Prince Rupert
The Drop of Prince Rupert
Prince Rupert showed interest in scientific experiments, he was one of the founders of the Royal Society. In particular, the prince experimented with the production of gunpowder (the method he proposed made gunpowder 10 times more efficient than Chinese), tried to improve guns, invented an alloy known as “Prince's metal”, and also developed a device for, so to speak, deep-sea diving, tried to improve surgical tools and was the author of outstanding engravings. As for the Botava Tears, most likely, such glass drops had been known to glassblowers since time immemorial, but they attracted the attention of scientists quite late: somewhere in the middle of the XVII century. They appeared in Europe (according to various sources, in Holland, Denmark or Germany). They were brought to England by Prince Rupert of Pfalz, which is why they began, following somebody's example, to be called Prince Rupert’s drops.

Our story is about glass blocks, universal bricks that can be useful to both the designer and the builder. Glass blocks are inexpensive, tested and reliable products, which due to their advantages have not lost their popularity over time and continue to be used in architecture and construction.

Glass Blocks in the Interior
Glass Blocks in the Interior
The glass block consists of two semi-blocks welded together. The halves form a cavity inside the product, filled with air or argon. Also, the cavity may be degasified. The thickness of the glass walls varies from 6 to 8 millimeters. Currently, manufacturers produce these products with various types of surfaces, different shapes, sizes, and shades.

Where can hollow glass blocks come in handy? Two main areas of application of different types of glass blocks are obvious: in decoration and construction. Here is a more detailed answer to the question of why such elements may be needed:

1. To create partitions. The expressive zoning of the space in residential premises looks original and much brighter than standard drywall or brick partitions.

2. As elements of external walls: on stairways, in kitchens, in checkrooms, bedrooms, corridors.

3. For lighting industrial premises in which ordinary glass cannot be used, but the use of strong glass blocks is allowed.

Variety of Glass Block Design

4. For fencing terraces, gazebos, winter gardens. Moisture resistance and light-scattering ability of glass blocks are ideal for such purposes, effectively transforming the interior and protecting sensitive plants from sunlight.

5. As decorative inserts in the walls. Recently, designers are increasingly resorting to such an original solution. This is due to the appearance of a variety of shapes, a variety of patterns on the surface, as well as colors.

6. For the separation of zones in the bathrooms. Glass blocks will make you feel comfortable, in addition, it is also a good way to avoid the appearance of fungus.

7. If desired, you can erect a whole staircase with steps made of such material or use glass blocks as a floor covering.
